Screening and evaluation of candidate chemical pesticides against Callosobruchus maculatus of stored legumes

The objective of the study is to develop an effective and relevant admixture treatment for stored mungbean. Insecticides under this study were deltamethrin, permethrin and fenvalerate (synthetic pyrethroids) and pirimiphos-methyl and fenitrothion (organophosphates). These were subjected to a series of intensive tests at laboratory trials. Results were further validated to establish their efficacy in a field trial. Fenvalerate and fenitrothion were eventually eliminated. Results showed that they both require relatively high dosages to control cowpea weevil. These dosages go above the established allowable maximum residue limits. Deltamethrin, permethrin and pirimiphos methyl passed the rigid requirements of the study. Results showed that 0.8 ppm, 1 ppm and 5 ppm, respectively can provide the expected protection of mungbean. Most importantly, these corresponding dosages are within the tolerable residue limits set by the World Health Organization and Food Agriculture Organization which are at 1 ppm for deltamethrin, 2 ppm for permethrin and 5 ppm for pirimiphos-methyl. Carbaryl was used as control check for the insecticide evaluated. Further, carbaryl is the most popular insecticide used by both traders and farmers as admixture of grains intended for prolonged storage. Important quality parameters such as moisture content, weight and germination rate among others, were not adversely affected. This study therefore, conclusively set the effective dosage for a particular insecticide to be recommended as admixture for the control of cowpea weevil in mungbean storage
