Correlation between bodyweight and body measurements in captive-bred Philippine cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis)

Chestgirth (CG), flankgirth (FG), midriffgirth (MRG) and bodylength (BL) measurements of 249 captive-bred Philippine cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) of both sexes and various ages were taken and analyzed to determine which body measurements could be used to predict liveweight. The most preferred body measurement for all animals, regardless of age and sex, was the CG, with the simple linear equation, BW = -3.95 + 0.24 CG. When sex was considered, a simple linear equation was most preferred for the female and male populations. Using a single measurement, both populations showed that FG as the most preferred body measurement to predict liveweight, with the equation, BW = -2.41+ 0.21 FG for the female and BW = -5.49 + 0.36 FG for the male. When age was considered, the preferred prediction equation for adult males (16-146 months) was BW = -8.88 + 0.39 CG, for adult females (49-128 months), BW = -1.39 + 0.15 CG and for young male and female population (1-12 months), BW = 0.56 + 0.08 FG. In general, for simplicity and practicality, anyone of the body measurements and their corresponding simple linear models could be used to determine the live weight of a particular monkey. In using the model, it must be considered that the predicted model may be satisfactorily applied only within the observed range of values, hence, extrapolation of values outside these observed ranges should be made with extreme caution; and the condition of the animal (i.e., captive-bred) must be specified
