Shellfish harvesting activity in Brgy. [village] Sillon started in 1993. With the use of Global Positioning System location readings of the traditional harvest sites of nailon shells were taken. Local shell divers were accompanied during the sample collection. The three sites are: 1.) in front of Sillon Island (N 11 deg 12.69', E 123 deg 46.25'), 2.) between Sillon and Hilantagaan Islands (E 123 deg 48', N 11 deg 12'), and 3.) the northern coast of Brgy. Tamiao (N 11 deg 13.58', E 123 deg 46.25'). The sites have an estimated depth of 15 m. Mainly three species of shellfish are harvested in large amounts in the area: Paphia (Family Veneridae), Glycymeris (Family Glycymerididae) and Placuna placenta (Family Pterridae). The shells are brought to shore and sold directly to the local markets or middlemen at P5/kilo for nailon shells and P3/kilo for brown cockles. Nailon shells are weighed and cleaned. Shells are then boiled in seawater for a few minutes until their shells open. The meat is carefully removed and cleaned by women and children, each being paid P0.50/kilo. Nailon shells delivered to Bantayan market are sold at P7/kilo. Processed meat (boiled) which is packed in ice is sold to middlemen and later shipped to Mandaue City for export (prices were not disclosed to the researchers). Empty shells are collected and left to dry; these are also sold to middlemen from Cebu at P1.50/kilo. These shells are used in the shellcraft industry for costume jewelry, furniture, etc. Records of harvest from the shell divers were also noted, though some of the data were already lost by the collectors. The total harvest from the months of January to October 1995 for the nailon shell was 12,888 kg over 92 d, and 30,575 kg of the brown cockle in 80 collecting d
