Estimation of variability and heritability for quantitative traits in groundnut

Twelve elite genotypes of groundnut were studied in the field in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Data for yield and yield components were recorded and subjected to analysis of valiance. Estimates of variability, broad sense heritability and genetic advance were made for 10 quantitative characters. The differences among the genotypes were highly significant for all the characters studied except for oil content where the differences were non-significant. High genotypic and phenotypic variances were recorded for pod weight per plant (145.60 and 167.73 respectively). Maximum genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variability were observed for kernel yield per plant, pod weight per plant and number of primary branches. The heritability estimates ranged from 0.28-0.92 and was highest for number od days taken to flowering. High genetic advance and high heritability for pod weight per plant indicated that additive gene effects are more important for this trait which offers scope for its improvement through mass selection.
