The effect of different nitrogen levels on the growth and yield of Garlic was studied during 1999. The various levels of N viz. 0, 50 80, 110, 140, 170 and 200 kg ha-1 were applied with a basal dose of 84 and 85 kg ha-1 P and K respectively. The number of leaves, bulb size and number of cloves per bulb were significantly affected by nitrogen application. The maximum number of leaves per plant, bulb weight and size, number of cloves per bulb and highest bulb yield were obtained with 140 kg N ha-1 application. These parameters increased with increasing level of Nitrogen upto 140 kg N ha-1. Beyond this dose, the yield and yield contributing factors showed decreasing trend, suggesting that 140 kg N ha-1 is the optimum dose for obtaining profitable Garlic yield.
