Some high chilling late cultivars of apple under trial in Murree Hills [Pakistan]

The present studies were made on the performance of nine high chilling late apple cultivars viz Red Delicious, King Red Delicious, Starking Delicious, Golden Delicious, Double Red Lebanon, Double Red USA, Granny Smith, Nugget and Sky Spur at Progeny Garden, Hill Fruit Research Station, Sunny Bank, Murree; during 1999-2000. Starking Delicious fruits were significantly larger in size index (80.50 mm) as compared to minimum size index (60.12 mm) in Granny Smith, Fruit weight was maximum (250 g) in Double Red Lebanon and minimum (160 g) in Granny Smith. Fruits of Nugget mature in the second week of September while Red Delicious, King Red Delicious, Starking Delicious, Double Red Lebanon and Double Red USA in the third week of September and all other cultivars in October and November. Significantly highest number of fruits/tree (500) and weight (137.20 kg) was attained in Sky Spur and least in other cultivars. Maximum TSS were noted in King Red Delicious, Starking Delicious and Golden Delicious while minimum in Sky Spur. Quantitatively Sky Spur, Nugget, Golden Delicious and Granny Smith performed well while all other cultivars proved better qualitatively.
