The protective role of warm breaks as stimuli of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT and APX) in maize seedlings subjected to chilling stress was examined. Plants were chilled for 8 days continuously or with daily applicated warm breaks, and then recovered for 7 days. APX activity was enhanced and cell membrane disruption was inhibited by all examined warm breaks, during chilling and postchilling phase. CAT activity was the most effectively stimulated by 5 h warming. SOD was less affected by warm breaks, but 5 h of warming increased enzyme activity in chilling-sensitive hybrid. In chilling resistant one an after-effect was observed. Increased protein content was responsible for enhanced enzyme activities during recovery only
