Applicationof 10 g hydrogel per pot raised the water capacity of soil and improved plant growth and development on medium sand. At higher doses of hydrogel combined with increased rainfall, tobacco plants entered the generative phase much earlier than the plants in control pots and their leaves turned yellow. The observations suggested that plants suffered from stress caused by the surplus of water in soil
