Effects of ethephon and paclobutrazol on growth and yield of soybean (Glycine max L.) Merill cv. S.J.5

Experiment was conducted to investigate the responses of plant growth regulators (ethephon and paclobutrazol), application methods and the rates of growth regulators on growth and yield of soybean S.J.5 cultivar. The results revealed that paclobutrazol markedly retarded plant height, however, the shoot and root dry weights and the yield components of soybean were increased over the control. Moreover, the chlorophyll content of the leaves was also found to be highest in paclobutrazol treated plant. Application of ethephon to soybean, the highest dry matter accumulation and the yield components in terms of pod number, pod weight and seed weight were obtained as compared to the paclobutrazol and untreated plants The optimum rates of ethephon and paclobutrazol to be used in soybean were 200 ppm and 150-200 ppm respectively. Foliar sprey of plant growth regulators was more efficient to improve shoot and root dry weights than that of soil drence application. Percentage of nitrogen in the shoot was also increased. In contrast, the yield components, accumulations of nitrogen and phosphorus in the root as well as phosphorus content in the shoot of soybean were higher by soil drence application.
