Species identification and histopathological change of Myxosporidiosis in wild sea catfish Plotosus canius Hamilton, 1822

Studies were made on Myxosporidian in wild sea catfish Plotosus canius Hamilton, 1822 from the east coast (Gulf of Thailand) at Songkhla Province and the west coast (Andaman sea) at Satun Province in Southern Thailand, Fish were collected during a five-month period from October 1997 to February 1998. Among 128 specimens collected, 98 (76.56 percent) were found infected with Myxosporidian. The highest frequency of infestation was note in the oval-shaped Zschokkella sp. followed by the cylindrical-shape Myxoproteus sp. The spore of the Zschokkella sp. measured 8.42-11.05 micron in length (Xmean=9.96+-0.78 micron) and 5.78-7.89 micron in width (Xmean=6.69+-0.56 micron). Their polar capsule has a diameter of 2.10-3.15 micron (Xmean=2.75+-0.23 micron). The spore of Myxoproteus sp. measured 6.84-10.00 micron (Xmean=8.04+-0.89 micron) with 3.15-5.26 micron width (Xmean=4.04+-0.61 micron), respectively. Polar capsule has a diameter of 1.57-2.10 microns (Xmean=1.70+-0.22 micron) Under light microscope wild sea catfish infested Zschokkella sp. showed no histopathological changes of gall bladder. Zschokkella sp., the spore and plasmodium were found dispersed in the gall bladder. Electron microscope studied of infected gall bladder, spore were found in presporogonic stage and young sporoblast. Under light microscope, wild sea catfish infested with Myxoproteus sp. showed histopathological changes i.e. hypertrophy of tubular epithelium, degenerated glomerulus and atrophy of kidney tubules. Under electron microscope, spores were in presporogonic stage with numerous plasmodium in tubular epithelial of kidney.
