Diploid and hapliod chromosome numbers from root tip and anther cells of 17 Thai Curcuma species investigated can be divided into 5 groups: Diploid number 2n = 42 n = 21 i.e. Waxy candle or Orange curcuma (Curcuma roscoeana Wall.), CMUPride (C. petiolata Wall.), Taksin Gems and Curcuma sp. 2. Chromosome 2n = 63 i.e. C. Zedoaria Rosc., C. xanthorrhiza Roxb., Pink Gem (C. elata Roxb.), and C. aeruginosa Roxb. 3. Chromosome 2n = 84 e.g. C. attenuata Wall. and Curcuma sp.; N = 42. 4 Diploid chromosome 2n = 32 and n = 16, came from Jade scale (Curcuma sp.) , Bua Lai (Curcuma sp.) and Patumma (C. alismatifolia Gagnep.) and 5 Diploid numbers not belong to these three groups were found in Buakomen (Curcuma sp.) 2n = 24 and n = 12, White Angel (C. thorelii Gagnep) with 2n = 34 and n = 17 and Firefly (C. parviflora Wall.) with various ploidy i.e. 2n = 28, 34, 36 and 56; and n = 14, 17, 18 and 28. Chromosomes sizes of this genus were very small ranging from 0.5 - 2.0 micrometres. The results obtained from the studies can be used to support species identification which is still very confused, and will also be beneficial to the Genus hybrid registration.
