Artificial diet producing for silkworm: 3. Development of artificial diet for mulberry leaves supplementation in silkworm

Diet containing 85 percent moisture provided a better growth but lower survival rate in the cocoon and lower cocoon percentage than those on diet containing 75 percent moisture. However, silk worm on 100 percent mulburry leaves gave the highest performances. Silk worm diets were cooked either by boiling or extrusion and then adjusted to 75 percent moisture content before supplemented to fresh mulburry leaves. Boilied feed had a better water hold capability thus better retention of moisture content and had a better attaching ability to the mulburry leaves than the extruded feed. which was not soft enough and unconsumable by the silk worm. Silk worms on boilded feed supplemental diet had better growth and production performance than those on the extruded feed but not comparable to those on 100 percent mulburry leave. Silk worms were divided into 3 groups and randomly fed the experimental diets as followings. Diet 1 : Mulburry leaves (control diet); Diet 2: A diet which cassava starch was cooked by boiling separately while the rest of the formular was extruded and dried at 60 deg C. All parts of the feed were mixed and soaked in the water for 30 minutes before supplement to mulburry leaves; Diet 3 : A diet which the whole formular was extruded and dried at 60 deg C. The feed was soaked in the water for 30 minutes before supplement to the mulburry leaves. The results have indicated that processing had no effects on production performances of the silkworms. However, silk worms on 100 percent mulburry leaves diet still have significantly (P.01) better production performances than those on the artificial feed supplemental diets. 23,000 silk larvae (1 box) were reared in environmental control condition at 27 deg C and 75 percent RH from instar 1 untill instar 5. The yield of fresh cocoon was 31 kg with only 1 percent dead cocoon. The percentage of cocoon was 23.
