Use of fire in agriculture as a technique for land clearing, field preparation or other farming purposes, remains a controversial subject. Is burning a valid and rational farming tool, amidst a range of others, or is it just a primitive outdated and destructive practice which should be stopped with all possible means? In this paper, we define the issue, stress the difference between controlled and uncontrolled burning, challenge some common misconceptions, update and summarize the current state of knowledge and make suggestions for a more opportunistic use of fire. The content is based on literature review, our own research findings, field observations and opinions from farmers.
