Production of silage from sweet corn waste for small farm dairy cattle operation

Four rations of feeding trials were conducted for dairy cows utilizing sweet corn waste as a roughage source. Ration no.1 contained plain sweet corn waste as the control treatment whereas ration no.2 was mixed with 3 percent urea and 3 percent molasses. Ration no.3 was the silage mixed with 3 percent rice bran and ration no.4 was mixed with 1.5 percent urea and 3 percent molasses. These respective rations contained 80.4, 78.8, 77.1 and 75.7 percent moisture with a protein content of 7.7, 13.9, 10.7 and 8.8 percent accordingly. The percentage of ADF and NDF ranged from 42.5 to 50.9 and 60.4 to 79.8, respectively. The results of the feeding trials showed that ration no.3 gave the highest output as compared to the standardization period of the experiment when no treatments were applied. Total variation, attributed to the treatment effect, was increased as the probability of committing Type I error was reduced from 2.6 percent to .01 percent. The least squares means of the milk yield from these respective 4 trials averaged 10.2, 9.5, 10.9 and 8.1 kg/head/day as compared to the average of 11.21 kg/head/day for the standardization period.
