[Studied on the relationship between single leaf respiration rates, leaf age and chlorophyll contents of Murraya paniculata]

Researchers studied the relationship between single leaf respiration rates, leaf age and chlorophyll contents of Murraya paniculata by assuming that o-day-old leaves were 2 centimeter long. Chlorophyll contents and single leaf respiration rates were determined at various leaf ages. Prior to respiration measurement, chlorophyll contents were measured by using chlorophyll meter. Chlorophyll was extracted from the leaves by 80 percent acetone and the chlorophyll contents were determined using spectrophotometric method. It was found that single leaf respiration rates decreaased exponentially as leaf age increased. Furthermore, respiration rates tended to decrease as chlorophyll contents increased. Chlorophyll contents rapidly increased in the young leaves and remained relatively unchanged in leaves older than 40 days. Finally, the extracted chlorophyll contents were positively correlated with the SPAD Units obtained from the chlorophyll meter.
