Study on performance and carcass quality of boars, barrows castrated by surgical method and barrows castrated by calcium chloride solution injection

Fourty male crossbred pigs were allotted in treatments of five animals each, using completely randomized design (CRD). TR I were barrows castrated by surgical method at an age of 8 weeks. TR II were the boars. TR III, IV and V were barrows castrated by intratesticular injection with calcium chloride solution at 60-65 kg bodyweight, injected with 10, 20 and 40 mg/kg bodyweight, respectively. TR VI, VII and VIII were barrows castrated by intratesticular injection with calcium chloride solution at 75-80 kg bodyweight, injected with 10, 20 and 40 mg/kg bodyweight, respectively. Records were kept from 30 kg till 100 kg evaluated their carcasses. The ADG of TR II were the highest and TR IV and TR V follows while the ADG of TR II, were statistically higher than TR I (P0.05). The time required to finishing of the TR II were shortest and the TR IV and TR V follows in orders while the TR II was statistically shorter period than TR I and TR VII (P0.05). The FCR of TR II were the best and TR VI and TR V were following orders that TR II were statistically better than TR I (P0.05). For carcass quality, boars and injected barrows had higher percentage of lean than barrows (TR I) (P0.01). TR I and TR V had lower boar odor than the other treatments (P0.05).
