The river Tisza was polluted by cyanide at the beginning of February 2000. Notwithstanding that, all of the sluices of side arms and canals were closed, this structures couldn't prevent the admission of the contaminated water to these water-bodies. The lesson that we can draw from this is, that the existing condition of these sluices isn't satisfactory. Consequently the water-bodies that are in direct connection with the Tisza river, can't be protected from this type of pollution. In spite of these, with the proper measures, we managed to lead the polluted water back to the Tisza without any serious damages. Examination of the pollution is being carried out according to a comprehensive national programme.
