Leafy vegetables rich in vitamins, minerals and other biogically active substances have a special place in human nutrition. They include a group of yellow-green vegetables, e.g., Lactuca sativa var. foliosa, Cichorium endivia and Cichorium intybus var. foliosum. A production trial has been established on a chernozem soil, in order to study the contents of macroelements and microelements in lettuce species. A two-year study showed that Cichorium endivia, the variety Maral, had the largest mass of marketable product, while Cichorium intybus var. foliosum, variety Rossa di Treviso had the highest percent of dry matter. The leafy lettuces had high contents of K, P and Mg, endive varieties had high contents of Ca. Cichorium endivia and Cichorium intybus var. foliosum had increased contents of N in relation to K. Cichorium intybus var. foliosum was found to have a high N requirement. The variety Rossa di Treviso was distinguished for the highest content of N, K, Zn and Mn.
