Accumulation of heavy metals in some vegetables as a function of their soil content

Uptake of heavy metals in various organs of lettuce, radish and carrot was investigated by means of pot experiments. The experiments were performed with soils differing in the degree of anthropogenic contamination with heavy metals (1. - intensively fertilized, garden, 2.- beside highway and 3.- soil with deposited waste). Beside heavy metals that are useful microelements (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu and Co) the content of toxic elements (Cr, Pb, Ni and Cd) was also analyzed. The results obtained enable us to conclude that there was enormous accumulation, especially in leaves of the investigated plants, of iron, zinc, lead and cadmium from soil heavily contaminated by deposited waste material (sample 3). The determined values are above maximum permissible contents for normal plant development and their use for human nutrition. In investigated samples of garden soil and soil alongside highway (samples 1 and 2) somewhat higher values (but within limits of maximum permissible contents) of iron, zinc, lead and nickel were found. They did not have depressive effect on the development of plants.
