In this study we investigated the mode of inheritance and gene effects on the mean number of fruits per tomato plant in the hybrids obtained by crossing seven homozygous lines that had been selected in the Centre for Vegetable Crops, Smederevska Palanka (Serbia, Yugoslavia). The most frequent mode of inheritance was intermediary. In the investigated F1 hybrids, additive gene effects were prevailing in inheriting this feature. Comparing all the hybrid combinations together, it was concluded that partial dominance was the mode of inheritance. The best general combining ability was found in the line No-10, which was characterized by the largest mean number of fruits per plant, whereas the hybrid combination V-100 x R-83 had the highest values of special combining ability.
