The content of magnesium in soils and vegetables from the Zeta region [Montenegro, Yugoslavia]

Zeta plain is the biggest producer and supplier of vegetables in Montenegro (Yugoslavia). Three most abundant vegetables in this region are paprika, tomato and watermelon, while alluvial and brown (shallow and very shallow) soils are most important. Results related to the content of magnesium in the aforementioned soils and vegetables are presented in this paper. The results obtained indicate that all three soils have high contents of available magnesium. The highest average value was found in brown shallow soil (2.47 meq/100 g), and the lowest in brown very shallow soil (2.13 meq/100 g). However, ratio between available calcium and magnesium is rather high. The content of magnesium in paprika and watermelon leaves is optimal, while in tomato leaves it is somewhat lower than optimal level. Negative and statistically very significant correlations were found between Mg content in the leaves of the investigated vegetables and Ca/Mg ratio in the soils.
