A need for establishing shelterbelts near cities and suburban settlements

Shelterbelts, which were established very intensively in last few years in Yugoslavia, are not sufficiently used for the improvement of the quality of the environment. They are established for a number of various purposes, not only for the prevention of water defficiency and increase in crop yield. Their influence on noise reduction and improved energy consumption in homes located in marginal zones of cities and suburban settlements is evident. They significantly alter the local distribution of rain and snow. Shelterbelts are also important as the site for the support, feeding and reproduction of wildlife which enriches the biodiversity in the area.
