Variability of some traits in lucerne within one breeding cycle

Sixteen alfalfa populations (varieties or experimental materials) were studied in a nursery for selection during 1996-1998. In genetic respect they differ in the trait of fall dormancy. The variability for productivity and number and length of stems within one three-year cycle of selection was most significant during the second year of lucerne development. The differences between the varieties were significant and the possibility to find genotypes possessing valuable economic traits was higher. The selection performed earlier or later can be inefficient since the variability of the trats investigated was lower or missing. There were no significant differences in early yield between the populations during the three years of investigations.
