Investigation of the losses due to unshelled kernels in the operation of a pin-equipped drum apparatus for maize shelling

Trifonov, A. (Agraren Universitet, Plovdiv (Bulgaria))
A pin-equipped drum apparatus for maize shelling was created, designed to be built in machines having an output of 600-1000 kg/h. An investigation was made of the effect of the kernel moisture content and of the peripheral speed of the shelling drum on the amount of the unshelled kernels. With a low moistire content of the kernels (13-17%), to reduce the losses from unshelled kernels below 0.5% the drum peripheral speed should be 6-7 m/s. With a kernel moisture content of 17-21% is needed a peripheral speed of 8-10 m/s, and with a moisture content of 24-25%, even a peripheral speed of 12-14 m/s is not sufficient to lower the amount of the unshelled kernels to under 2%.
