The effect of liquid fertilizers application on the damaged spruce stands in western part of the Ore Mts.

In spring 1999, within the western part of the Ore Mts. vast damage of the spruce stands was observed, characterised by colour changes - yellowing of the older needle years and gradual drying and fall of the needles of all age classes. Changes in colour confirm so called "new damage" of forest stands, caused by the long-term impact of air pollution, mainly acid deposition, in the forest soil. Soil degradation can be observed, caused by acidification of the upper layers of the soil profile and leaching of nutrients, mainly basic elements, from the sorption complex. The investigation has confirmed critical lack in basic nutrients, mainly Mg and Ca. Also the nutrient content in needles was very low, reaching nearly the insufficiency threshold (N, P, Ca, Zn), or physiological minimum (Mg - 250-300 mg/kg). In many cases irreversible damage and fall out of assimilation organs occurred. Low contents of S and F have confirmed that it was not acute damage but long-term trend affecting negatively the nutrient status. To stop the negative development, aerial fertilising by liquid fertilisers and liming by dolomite lime was recommended.
