The effects of the long-term feeding of dietary lipase on the performance of laying hens

The effect of the enzyme lipase on the health and performance of Isabrown laying hens was studied during 52 weeks. The hens were fed ad libitum. The control group EXT was fed a mixture containing extruded feed as well as wheat, corn, fish meal and premix. The experimental group ENZ was fed the same mixture, but lipase was added (500 g/t). We did not observe any health problems in either group of hens during the experiment. In comparison with EXT hens, the average egg weight of ENZ hens was heavier (62.5 +/- 0.38 g vs. 61.8 +/- 0.39 g), the coefficient of fat retention was slightly superior (0.92 +/- 0.008 vs. 0.91 +/- 0.007), but the average daily egg mass production was slightly inferior (54.6 +/- 0.84 g/hen/day vs. 54.8 +/- 0.69 g/hen/day). The addition of lipase significantly enhanced polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) concentration in the yolk fat (18.2 vs. 16.4 %, P 0.01), liver weight (48.3 +/- 3.66 g vs. 41.1 +/- 2.09 g, P 0.05) and hepatic haemorrhage occurrence, and significantly decreased concentration of erythrocytes in blood (2.08 +/- 0.102 T/L vs. 2.27 +/- 0.055 T/L) and concentration of monounsaturated fatty acid in the yolk fat (58.5 vs. 60.0 %, P 0.05). We concluded that dietary lipase had several positive effects (especially on the PUFA concentration), but had negative effect on liver as it caused an increased occurrence of haemorrhage.
