Therapeutic antibiotics are used in the treatment and control of many types of infections in a wide variety of animal species. This use can lead to the selection of resistant forms of microorganisms to antibiotics. In current study 1903 milk samples were collected from all the lactating cows in seven Estonian dairy farms, whereas there were no signs of clinical mastitis. The study indicated that antibiotic resistance of potentially pathogenic mastitis causing bacteria was quite high, over half of the isolated bacterial strains were resistant to at least one antibiotic. Highest resistance occurred against penicillin and ampicillin. Considering this, it might become quite difficult in the near future to find the most effective antibacterial drug for th treatment of clinical mastitis in Estonian dairy herds
