Major fertilizer studies conducted on Ethiopian soils and crops

This paper summarizes fertilizer studies conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture from 1967-1990. Various fertilizer trials have been carried out in Ethiopia since 1967 with the assistance of donor agencies and organizations. The paper includes a review of the trials data produced by FFHC from 1967 to 1969, by EPID from 1971 to 1974, by IAR/ADD since 1981 and by the National Fertilizer trials programme (ADD/NFIU) from 1986 onwards. Fertilizer demonstrations were also conducted by ADD all over the country since 1970. NFIU has undertaken great effort to computerize and analyze this valuable information. Most of the fertilizer studies were conducted on major cereal crops with major plant nutrients (NPK) on a range of soil types. However, the broad recommendations adopted by EPID in the seventies ares still the sole fertilizer recommendations for major cereals crops and compared with the revised recommendations by ADD/NFIU (1990), denotes that the present nutrient consumption is unbalanced and does not meet the nitrogen requirements for major cereal crops, especially for teff and wheat in Shewa and Gojam.
