The response of coffee (coffee Arabica) to N and P fertilizers at Wonago

The response of uniform plantation of arabica coffee to nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilizers was investigated at Wonago-Sidamo, on Eutric Nitosol to determine the optimum rate of the fertilizers needed for the crop. A factorial experiment in randomized complete block design consisting of four levels of N (0,100, 200 and 300 kg/ha) and three levels of (0,33 and 66 kg/ha) with their possible combination was laid down on 3 year old trees of CBD resistant selection (74110) for five year (1983-1992). Combined analysis of the five years experimental data for the application of N (between 200-300 kg/ha) and P (between 33-66 kg/ha) showed significant yield differences when compared with the control plot. The interaction effect of both nutrients was also significant for 300-33 kg N-P/ha and 200-66 kg N-P/ha the yield of the former being the highest. Hence, increases in yield of 36% (278 kg/ha clean coffee) and 24% (184 kg/ha clean coffee) were obtained over the control due to interaction at these rates, respectively, and no significant difference was observed between them. It is recommended that using 200/66 kg N-P/ha to similar areas in Sidamo for coffee lines that have similar yield potential with the selection used in this study will be beneficial to the farmers of the region.
