The performance of lactating does supplemented with different combinations of groundnut cake (GNC) and wheat bran (WB) was studied using 25 somali does mated to anglo-Nubian bucks. the performance of their crossbred kids before and after weaning was also assessed. The study was carried out in two consecutive experiments namely before and after weaning. Rations used in the experiments were groundnut cake (GNC) to wheat bran (WB) in the ratio of 0:100, 25:75 and 100:0. The supplements were offered at the rate of 400 gms per doe. Five does were used per treatment in completely randomized design. Weight gain of does during lactation was significantly (p0.05) higher for does on the 75:25 GNC:WB supplement than those on the other treatments. This combination also resulted in significantly (p0.01) higher dry matter intake (DmI) and higher (p0.05) weight gain of kids: milk yield of does and weaning weight of kids during lactation. Post-weaning weight gain of kids whose dams were supplemented with 75:25 GNC:WB ratio was significantly (p0.05) higher than kids in other treatments. Among the milk components only protein content was influenced significantly. Those does supplemented with 100:0 groundnut cake to wheat bran ratio had higher milk protein content than the other groups. No kid mortality was recorded for the 75:23 GNC to WB ratio. Based on the result obtained, higher levels of groundnut cake inclusion (protein source) at 75 and 100% in the supplement improved most of the performance parameters of lactating Somali does. Kids from these does also attained higher average weight gain before and after weaning than the rest.
