The role of Diaporthe eres in the early death of young fruit trees
2002
Vajna, L.
The author reports cases of early dieback of young apple, pear, peach and plum trees, which occured in 1997-2001 years in Hungary. Typical symptoms appeared on trees 1-3 years after planting. Foliage of the affected trees chlorotic, vegetative growth is weak, leaves are wilting and the trees die rapidly. In such cases phloem necrosis was typical near the graft union. The presence of Diaporthe eres Nits. (anamorph: Phomopsis oblonga Desmaz.) Traverso has been associated with the disease syndrome. The role of wound- and stress-pathogenic fungus in the disease development and the possibilities of preventive control are discussed.
