The effect of surface residues of azinphos-methyl on adult activity of the codling moth (Cydia pomonella) was investigated under laboratory conditions. With computerised actographs, we measured locomotor activity in the moths subjected to 5-hour exposure to 4 low rates (12.5, 25, 50, and 100 ppm). Exposures influenced the level but not the rhythmic pattern of diel activity in both sexes. In comparison to the control (0 ppm), in males the activity was significantly elevated for those exposed to the surface residue of 50 ppm, whereas in females the stimulatory effect increased with the rate of surface residues, the difference between the treatment of 100 ppm and the control was significant. Under field conditions, this will remain without consequences in the azinphos-methyl treated plot due to high ovicidal and larvicidal efficacy of the pesticide. Adjacent to a plot treated with a different technique such as mating disruption, however, this increased activity could have an undesirable effect
