Quantitative genetics and the management of genetic resources. The role of biometrical genetics in the study, management, and exploitation of genetic resources | [Génétique quantitative et gestion des ressources génétiques . Le rôle de la génétique biométrique dans l'étude, la gestion et l'exploitation des ressources génétiques]

The management of ex situ plant genetic resources is changing from a qualitative approach, aiming at gathering and maintaining individual accessions, to a quantitative one optimising the conservation of diversity in the collections. This raises a large number of new biometrical genetic and statistical questions. An inventory of these questions is made, dividing genebank operations into four clusters: (1) compilation of the collections including collecting the material, and optimising the representation of genetic diversity, (2) storage and regeneration, including viability testing, (3) evaluation and characterisation, and (4) exploitation, including population improvement for genebank purposes
