Responses of different strains of silkworm (Bombyx mori) to artificial diet

An artificial diet formulated from mulberry, corn, soybean and blood meal were tested on 6 strains of silkworm (Bombyx mori) from the first instar onward until coccon formation. The results demonstrated that all the strains tested, i.e. CDR-301 polyhybrid strains from Candiroto Silkworm Breeding Center, Japan parentstock Bo-110 and B-102 strain and China x Japan crossbred B-1029 strain (donated by the Center for Natural Sericulture, Forestry Research and Develoment Agency), responded well to the diet, but rearing performance of the CDR-301 polyhybrid strain in superior to the others in the rainy season), and also in that of miscellaneous, i.e. unimodal in the rainy season. However, no marked seasonal rate pattern in recognized in the fall of leaves and terminal buds. While production of fruits of B. parviflora and Rhizophora apiculata are vigorous, that of fruits of B. sexangula are low. The annual litter-fall of those mangrove forests (1096 to 1269 g/m at the power of -2 /year at the power of -1 are close to that of the mangrove forest in Muara Angke-Jakarta and Tiris Indramayu, West Java, Indonesia
