influence of fast and slow growing Rhizobia on growth and yield of soybean (Glycine max)

The present investigation was carried out in Kharif (rainy) seasons of 1995 to 1998 on Vertisols to study the growth characteristics and yield performance of soybean as influenced by different inoculants of fast and slow growing Rhizobia applied under rainfed conditions. The inoculation of seeds with different inoculatnts of fast and slow growing species of Rhizobium resulted in market improvement in nodulation, shoot dry weight, pods per plant, total dry biomass (straw+shedded residues) and seed yield compared to no-inoculation. However, variation was observed in plants response to different inoculats. Maximum nodules and their dry weight, shoot dry weight, pods, total dry biomass and seed index were recorded with the Sehore-1 inoculum (slow growing species). A significant co-rrelation (r) between nodule number with nodule-dry weight, pods, total biomass and seed yield and nodule dry weight with pods, total biomass and seed yield, shoot dry weight with seed yield and total biomass with seed yield were also observed.
