Functions to predict corn (Zea mays l) yield response to water

A field experiment was conducted to develop various forms of production functions relating corn grain yield to seasonal evapotranspiration. Grain yield, and seasonal evapotranspiration (Eta) in fully irrigated control treatment (W-W-W) was 6.91 t ha-1, and 457.7 mm during 1993-94 respectively. Crop yield-seasonal water production functions as expressed by linear, quadratic, cubic, power, Stewart S1 and Stewart's S2 and Singh et al. (1987) functions were found statistically acceptable with regard to fitting of the observed grain yield data of corn. The explained total variation as indicated by values of the R2 varied from 0.837 to 0.987 in 1992-93, 0.838 to 0.982 in 1993-94 for grain yield in different crop yield-water production functions. But one or both of the regression coefficients of non-linear functions i.e. quadratic, cubic and Singh el al. functions were statistically non-significant. Hence, the linear functions, in view of simplicity will be practically more useful to predict yield response of corn (Zea mays L) to water.
