Biology of Neochetina bruchi hustache, a bioagent of water hyacinth

A Curculionid bioagent, Neochetina bruchi Hustache attacking a number one aquatic weed, water hyacinth was laid 6.5 eggs day-1 for first ten days and 2.2 eggs day-1 for next 17 days in a total oviposition period of 27 days. Fecundity was 108 eggs. Eggs are pale greenish, oval in shape with 0.78 x 0.57 mm in size. Incubation period was 8.3 and 7.4 days in May and August. Body length, head width and larval stage durations was 1.95, 0.29 mm and 10.5 days in first instar; 3.6, 0.49 mm and 13.6 days in second instar and 5.9, 0.71 mm and 15.1 days in third instar, respectively. Prepupal and pupal stages appeared under water and required 7.4 and 27 days, respectively. Total duration from egg to adult emergence was 75.7 days. Longevity of male by providing only water, food and both was 17, 20 and 26 days.
