Correlation and path analysis of quantity and quality traits of fodder sorghum hybrids and their parents

Yield is a complex character dependent upon many components. Studies on the correlation of characters and their relative direct and indirect effects on yield are of immense value in selection of superior genotypes. In correlation studies, plant height, stemgirth, number of leaves per plant, panicle weight and panicle length are important traits for selection of dual purpose of sorghum. The Crude protein content was negatively correlated with Crude fibre and positively correlated with grain and fodder yield. The Crude fibre content was significantly and negatively correlated with grain and fodder yield. Path analysis revealed that the component traits namely plant height, stemgirth and number of leaves / plant showed positive direct effects where as Extractable juice yield and Crude protein showed negligible direct effect on dry fodder yield, while focussing the traits, plant height, number of leaves/ plant, Extractable juice yield and Crude protein will improve the yield and quality for fodder sorghum.
