Total protein and free amino acids were determined in pericarp and endosperm of high protein barley mutant notch-2 and its low protein parent genotype NP113, during grain development. protein (Per unit dry weight) increased upto mid maturity in pericarp and upto full grain maturity in endosperm. Free amino acids (per unit dry weight) decreased during development in both pericarp and endosperm. Protein and free amino acid levels were higher in Notch-2 compared with NP 113 in both pericarp and endoserpm. Results relate the levels of free amino acids in pericarp and endosperm to grain protein, and suggest pericarp as temporary rresere for free amino acids in developing barley grain.
