Physiological investigations of male sterility caused by Enarthrocarpus lyratus cytoplasm in brassicas

The physiological basis of cytoplasmic male sterility caused by altered nucleocytoplasmic interactions was investigated for Iyratus cytoplasmic male sterility in B. campestris and B. juncea. In general alien cytoplasmic substitution caused slight but statistically non significant genotype dependent alterations in chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b content or chI a/chI b ratio. Except for a few instances the carotenoid content was higher in CMS lines which was morphologically manifested in leaf yellowing. Euplasmic lines showed higher levels of kinetin, indole acetic acid and abscisic acid in phloem sap as compared to those in their euplasmic maintainer parents.
