Soil-plant-animal relationship of zinc in milch buffaloes of Jind district in Haryana

Samples of soils, feeds and fodders grown on such soils and milk, blood and hair of 150 milch buffaloes of 10 villages of jind district of Haryana were collected and analyzed for zinc content. Diethylene triamine penta acetic acid extractable zinc content of soil varied from 0.30 to 1.97 with an average of 0.690.03 mg/kg Average zinc content in wheat straw, berseem, sorghum stover, cottonseed-cake and wheat flower were 14.8, 33.3, 33.7, 38.4 and 26.1 mg/kg, respectively. Total zinc intake of milch buffaloes varied between 216.8 and 725.3 with and average of 409.6 mg/day. The diet contained an average of 26.7 mg zinc/kg. Zinc content of blood, milk and hair averaged to 2.73, 0.28 and 38.12 mg/kg. Total zinc intake was found to have positive correlation with milk (r=0.20), blood (r=0.19) and hair (r=21) zinc. These observations showed that widespread dificiency of zinc was prevalent in soil, feeds and fodders which was culminated in its dificiency in milk and blood of milch buffaloes.
