Inheritance of resistance in clusterbean to Alternaria blight (Alternaria cucumberian var. cyamopsidis) disease

Crop breeding for resistance to various diseases essentially depends upon a constant supply of new sources of resistance in germplasm. Moreover, additional insight into the genetic basis of high levels of resistance can be gained throught inheritance studies. In clusterbean, no report is available on inheritance of Alternaria hlight resistance. he results of present studies indicated the dominance of susceptibility over resistance in F1 and a genetic ratio of 1:3 (resistant : susceptible) was observed in F2 generation of the crosses, HG-365 x FS-277, x HG-365, HG-365 x RGC-936 and RGC-936 x HG-365. This ratio was further confirmed by a good fit of 1:1 (resistant : susceptible) ratio of backcroses involving resistant as recurrent parent in all crosses. This suggested that single gene with recessive effect is responsible for the inheritance of Alternaria blight resistance in clusterbean in natural and artificially inoculated conditions.
