Origin and characteristics of winter wheat cultivar 'Moda' (Otto)

'Moda' (Otto) is a winter wheat variety (Tritucum aestivum L., var lutescens) bread at the Department of Crop Production of Latvia University of Agriculture. In 1985 cross combination Donskaja polukarlikovaja/Abe and propagation of F1-F3 was made at the State Stende Plant Breeding Station. Single ears were selected in F3 and, without threshing, were sown and evaluated in F4 in 1989. The line corresponding to a variety 'Moda' (Otto) was investigated in the small plot nurseries (1990-1993), in the competitive trials (1994-1995), and during the State Variety testing (1995-1998). DUS-test was done in Estonia from 1999 to 2000. 'Moda' (Otto) is included in the Latvian Catalogue of Plant Varieties in 2002. 'Moda' (Otto) is a late - season variety, characterised with yield level 6-8 t ha*[-1). It has a good resistance to hardiness and lodging, and weak to medium resistance to powdery mildew and leaf rust, gluten content 19-28 % depending on growing conditions. The authors of variety: I.
