The present day yields levels of different field crops are difficult to maintain. However, the breeders and associate fellow workers/research workers are continuously trying to increase yield levels via different manipulation available with them. The major food legume, chickpea crop is also having similar situation where yield levels are not increasing throughout the world. Though there are different option available viz. restructuring of plant type, utilization of a line genes, manipulation of unexploited traits and adoption of agronomic and integrated disease pest management. However, concerted efforts in this direction are lacking which needs more attention. With this concept the unexploited traits in chickpea were identified and breeding efforts were concentrated to break the yield barriers for increased productivity. For example the bigger seed size in Desi chickpeas are not common in cultivation, the dwarfing concept has not been understood properly, the leafy variation has not been utilized, root and nodulation variations are untouched. In recent years at Division of Genetics, Indian Agricultural Research Inst., New Delhi, India, these traits were identified to incorporate in breeding populations for the development of productive genotypes. Successfully, bold seeded desi type which are having 100-seed weight more than 45 g and high yield potential and contrasting tall vs. dwarf populations have been isolated which are possessing unique traits and high levels of seed yields
