Growth and yield of young palms as affected by annual and intermittent fertilizer application

A 10-year field experiment comparing the annual and various intermittent fartilizer application cycles or frequencies on coconut revealed that the fertilizer application of two consecutive years with one year gap compared well with the practice of annual fertilizer application. This was manifested in terms of growth of young coconut as early as one year after field planting and consistently carried on in terms of yield during the bearing stage. Further gap of fertilization for another year after one or two years of fertilization did not sustain growth and yield of coconut. The two consecutive years and one year gap (2AP-1G) scheme realized an accumulated savings of 31% in terms of fertilizer input and labor cost in applying the fertilizer. This incurred only 6-8% reduction in net income during the later years compared with annual fertilizer treatment. This technology could be a useful guide in the absence of annual leaf analysis to determine the annual nutrient status and fertilizer needs of coconut. This is very likely applicable in loamy to clayey soils as the Tugbok (Tropudalf) soil of Davao [Philippines]
