Identification and selection of outstanding coconut tall populations as sources of planting materials for the replanting program

The urgent need to replant existing senile stands of coconut in the country has been recognized to uplift the current state of coconut industry. Coconut breeding activities have led to the development of high yielding dwarf x tall hybrids that can be distributed all over the country. However, the enormous amount of effort, time and money required to produce these hybrids have limited the widespread distribution and use of different hybrids. The objective of the study is to identify outstanding open-pollinated coconut plantations/populations that can be tapped as ready sources of planting materials. Prospective populations from all over the country were evaluated for agronomic, morphological and biochemical characteristics for at least eight time spread over three years. Copra yield per hectare and nut production per year were the bases for selection. Eleven plantations which yielded more than 2.5 tons per hectare and giving close to 10 T nuts/ha/year were identified. Cluster and principal component analysis were used to assess genetic diversity of the coconut plantations to give information on the current diversity of coconut in the Philippines. Furthermore, information on sampling size for characterization and evaluation of coconut plantations were also established
