Effect of sodium salt on the physiological and biochemical behavior of sodic tolerant rice varieties

A simple and effective technique of screening was developed to study the expression of salt tolerant genes towards specific sodium salts from seed to seedling stage. a standard technique of preparing varying levels of electrical conductivity solutions for NaCl, NaHCO3, Na2SO4 and their combination representing the Tiruchirapali sodic soils by keeping the pH constant at 9.0. Sodic soils tolerant genotypes like TRY1 and CO43 were used to identify the tolerance towards a particular sodium salt. Screening was carried out from seed up to 14 d old seedlings in rolled towel germination paper in the various sodium solutions. CO43 gave better expression of tolerance towards Na2CO3 and Na2SO4 salt stress. Likewise TRY1 showed better expression of tolerance towards NaCl and Na2CO3 salt stress. CO43 performed better under the Na combination solution where the proportion of salts was 4 Na2CO3: 4 Na2SO4:2 NaHCO3:1NaCl. The above findings were based on the germination rate, germination percentage, root length, shoot length, seedling length, dry matter content, vigor index, root proline, shoot proline. Such studies can be extended to other salts for identifying useful can be extended to other salts for identifying useful donors for breeding salt tolerant varieties
