Sustainable rice production in salt-affected lowland soils

Rice production in low-lying areas is adversely affected by sea water intrusions. Optimizing productivity in this marginal agroecosystem requires wise management of resources and development of farm technologies to sustain productivity. Development of adoption of salt-tolerant rice cultivars provided a critical genetic advantage in increasing rice yields. Four salt-tolerant elite lines were developed for national testing namely: PR25985-2-4B, PR26016-B-B, PR26008-8-4B and IR52713-2B-8-2B-1-2. Evaluation and promotion in four municipalities obtained 4.12 t/ha, 4.14 t/ha and 4.22 t/ha, respectively. Through a knowledge-base strategy, culture and management practices designed to complement the improved plant types, created a favorable physical environment which enhanced productivity per unit area of salt-affected soils. Plants were transplanted at 21 to 28 days old during low tide; flushed with fresh water; ameliorated with Kieserite and zinc sulfate; and fertilized at 60-30-30, 1/2 applied at 10 to 14 after transplanting and 1/2 at maximum tillering stage. Using partial budget analysis, the package of technology developed incurred additional labor and fertilizer cost of investments but gave higher net profitability of P18,164.23 compared to the traditional practice of farmers
