Genetic analysis of chlorophyll-b less rice mutant cv. Zhenhui 249 was discovered in 1996-1997. The result showed that the chlorophyll-b less trait is controlled by a pair of recessive genes. As compared to wild-type rice cv. Zhenhui 249, the mutant had lower chlorophyll content and net photosynthetic rate, but higher ratio of Chla to Chlb, saturation light intensity and ratio of active photosynthesis duration to life span of flag leaf. In addition, its biomass production, weight per panicle, 1000-grain weight were lower than those of wild-type rice cv. Zhenhui 249, but it had higher tillering capacity and number of efficient panicles as well as medium maturity period, resulting in its high yield. Above results showed that chlorophyll-b less mutant cv. Zhenhui 249 has a high value as a researh material for study on photosynthesis and genetic improvement
