A single-reversal feeding trial involving 12 Holstein Friesian x Red Sindhi corssbred cows fed rations differing primarily in crude fiber content was conducted during the period Jan to April 1966. The rations compared contained an average of 12.5 and 18.5 percent of fiber on a dry matter basis. This experiment was aimed to find out the effects of dietary fiber level on milk production, certain physiological responses, and the efficiency of milk production of cows. The feeding of the low-fiber ration resulted in the following: significant increase in the production of 4 percent fat-corrected milk (FCM) (P0.01); significant decrease in rectal temperature (P0.01); pulse rate (P0.01), and respiration rate (P0.01); significant decrease in milk fat percentage (P0.01); significant decrease in percent ruminal acetic acid (P0.01), and significant increase in percent propionic acid (P0.01). Fiber level should be taken into consideration in forming rations for lactating cows in the Philippines. The significant rise in rectal temperature with increased fiber intake indicated a lowering of heat tolerance of the cows in this study.
